SurModics Corporate History
The company was formed in 1979 by three scientists to develop and commercialize diagnostic and medical/pharmaceutical products from their organic, photochemical, and immunodiagnostic expertise.
In 1987, the company shifted its strategic objective from contract research to the commercialization of its unique PhotoLink® surface modification and immobilization technologies, and in 1990, added the marketing of biomolecule stabilization products.
In July 1997, BSI Corporation changed its name to SurModics, Inc. to more accurately reflect the company's current and future business focus in the field of surface modification. SurModics became a public company (Nasdaq National Market: SRDX) on March 4, 1998.
SurModics is now a leading provider of drug delivery and surface modification technologies in the areas of: site-specific and systemic drug delivery, advanced hydrophilic coatings, biocompatible and prohealing coatings, tissue engineering, and in vitro technologies.
In July 2007, SurModics acquired Brookwood Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading provider of drug delivery technology primarily to the pharmaceutical industry, from Southern Research Institute. The addition of Brookwood’s core capabilities, injectable microparticles and implant technology, further strengthen SurModics' position as a leading company in polymer based drug delivery. Our collective technology enables us to offer both site specific and systemic drug release capabilities to a broad range of customers in several large markets.
In August 2007, SurModics further broadened its product portfolio within the in vitro diagnostics market through the acquisition of BioFX Laboratories, a developer, manufacturer and marketer of colorimetric and chemiluminescent substrates and several accessory reagents.
In September 2008, SurModics re-acquired the rights to our microarray slide product line. These slides were originally developed and introduced to the market by SurModics in 1999, but had been marketed since 2000 by Motorola, Amersham, and eventually GE Healthcare under the CodeLink® trademark. Microarray slides are used as diagnostic and research tools for profiling genes through the analysis of proteins, DNA, and RNA.
Our technology portfolio enables us to serve numerous clinical areas and markets, including cardiovascular, ophthalmology, central nervous system (CNS), orthopedics, oncology, diabetes and other fields.
Representative examples of our efforts include:
- Implementation of our Bravo™ Drug Delivery Polymer Matrix as a key component of the Cypher® Sirolimus-eluting Coronary Stent from Cordis Corporation, a Johnson & Johnson company
- Development of the I-vation™ Sustained Drug Delivery System that is currently in human trials for treatment of retinal disease
- Implementation of our hydrophilic coatings on various drug-eluting stent delivery systems, atherectomy systems, catheters, and guidewires
SurModics partners with the world's foremost medical device, pharmaceutical, and life science companies, and is bringing innovation together to enhance the well-being of patients.
