Packaging Engineer III

Department: Drug Delivery
Responsibilities: The Packaging Engineer will lead the development and implementation of manufacturing processes for the packaging of medical devices incorporating pharmaceutical products. The Packaging Engineer designs and validates packaging line for revolutionary drug delivery applications and drug coating equipment. The engineer may implement these processes in-house, at an offsite SurModics manufacturing facility, or with a subcontractor/supplier. Responsibilities include the following:
  • Packaging design, validation and manufacturing scale up of packaging lines.
  • Act as project leader for packaging projects and have overall responsibility for the successful outcome of the project.
  • Upon idea approval by the product planning committee, prepare a detailed project plan outlining resource needs including supplies, equipment, personnel, system design, and timeline.
  • Provide project updates, reports, and recommendations as needed.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with both internal and external customers and co-workers, contributing to a team environment.
  • Assist and mentor lower level engineers and technicians
  • Perform responsibilities in compliance with the quality systems as described in SurModics’ Quality Manual.
  • Adhere to all company safety, health and environmental policies, procedures and directives.
  • Conduct all experiments in a safe manner by use of MSDS to establish chemical hazards; observe the appropriate laboratory procedures; and report all incidents that could threaten the safety of laboratory personnel.
Qualifications:
  • B.S. in engineering-related field or equivalent education and experience
  • 5+ years experience in packaging design, validation and manufacturing scale up of packaging lines
  • 4+ years manufacturing experience
  • Project management experience
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Polymer coating, pharmaceutical, and/or medial device experience preferred
  • Good problem solving skills
