Microencapsulation

Drug delivery using microparticle technology involves bioresobable, polymeric particles that encapsulate a therapeutic agent, for delivery via injection or site-specific placement.  Parenteral delivery methods are valuable delivery alternatives to oral and other routes when the bioavailability of drugs may be an issue, when compliance is required, or  when long-term treatment is necessary (days, weeks, and months).

Brookwood Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of SurModics, has significant experience and intellectual property in the field of microparticle drug delivery working with virtually all drug classes and therapeutic areas.  Using this extensive technology base, we can develop long-acting, injectable microparticles for systemic, local, and cellular delivery of active pharmaceutical ingredients and vaccines. Active ingredients microencapsulated to date include small molecules, peptides, proteins ( including antibodies)  and nucleic acids.

Therapeutic areas include:

  • Ophthalmic
  • Orthopedic
  • CNS
  • Cardiovascular
  • Urologic
  • Pain
  • Nerve growth
